Spearmint: cooling, clearing and quietly hormonal

Not the same as peppermint

Spearmint carries carvone rather than the sharp menthol of peppermint, which makes it sweeter, rounder and far gentler on a sensitive stomach. It is the mint to reach for when peppermint feels too cold or too strong.

After a heavy meal

Spearmint relaxes the smooth muscle of the digestive tract, which is why it eases bloating, gas and that heavy feeling after eating. It also cools the body on hot afternoons, served over ice with a squeeze of lime.

The hormone research

Small clinical trials have found that two cups of spearmint tea a day reduced free testosterone in women with PCOS and improved hirsutism scores over a month. It is not a cure, but it is one of the better-studied gentle herbal supports for hormonal balance.

How to use it

Steep fresh sprigs or a teaspoon of dried leaf for five minutes. One cup after meals for digestion; two cups a day, morning and evening, if you are drinking it for hormonal support.
